Governor Kinyanjui signs Sh1.3bn water & sanitation pact with Netherlands firm
Nakuru County Governor Lee Kinyanjui today signed a Sh1.3billion agreement with Vitens Evides International (VEI) to improve water and sanitation in the County.
VEI was represented share-holders, Annette Ottolini, Jelle
Hannema and CEO Marco Schouten.
VEI is the leading drinking water provider in Netherlands and works in 20 countries including Kenya.
Governor Kinyanjui said the partnership that will see water providers in the County; NAWASSCO, NARUWASCO and NAIVAWASS each get Sh450 million to improve service delivery.
He said the population in Nakuru Town and Naivasha is growing, and will rise further in about five years upon construction of the Standard Gauge Railway and an industrial park in Naivasha.
“As a County we want to plan ahead to ensure we have adequate water supply. The partnership will also improve water supply in the rural areas,” he said.
The project will also cover sanitation that will help conserve Lake Naivasha and and Lake Nakuru.
The Governor said NAWASSCO already has a project, supported by VEI, where fuel that can be used in jikos (briquettes) are being produced from human waste.
Mr.Cees Lefarbag, the sanitation project leader said a machine to boost production of the briquettes to 10,000 tonnes a month has been transported to Nakuru.
He said the project will help save at least 800 trees a day by providing alternative fuel thus conserve the environment.
Nakuru CECM for Water Eng. Festus Ng’eno said the success of the project was due to the enabling environment under the County leadership.
Mr Schouten, who is VEI CEO said the main aim of the organization is to have an impact on the lives of people.
Ms. Attolini and Mr Hannema said they are impressed by the leadership and progress by the water providers in clean water delivery.
Mr. Hannema said good working environment is crucial to service delivery partnerships
He appreciated the current County leadership that is enabling such projects to be successfully implemented.
The VEI team visited water projects in Naivasha and Nakuru.
