BY MOSES RABACH
After acquiring its township status in 1904, Nakuru town has been on the rise for over sixteen decades. Since then the town has attracted 1.6 million residents according to the 2009 Housing and Population Census.
Due to its possession of major tourist attraction sites and scenes such as the Nakuru National Park, Mt Longonot, the Menengai Crater to name a few, they have helped the County Government of Nakuru emerge as the fastest growing towns in Kenya when it was named by the United Nations Agency in 2011.
Before being offered the Charter of joining the likes of Nairobi, Mombasa, and Kisumu in City status, a lot is going on, in and out of the town.
Planning of the town and garbage
Among the issues the county is expected to tackle is the planning of the town and garbage disposal. Already the process to renovate the road network in the town is underway. Where the roads that serve Milimani estate, Menengai, London estate and Industrial Area, Bondeni, Naka among others are currently in the process of renovation.
Also, the county government in conjunction with the Rift Valley Water Service Board have signed a contract of 250 million shillings with the aim of boosting water supply in the county.
Installation of CCTV cameras
Security is a sensitive matter in any town, the county government through Governor Lee Kinyanjui has urged the central government to support the county in installing CCTV cameras especially in the CBD. “We request you to help us in the installation of the CCTV within our CBD and within our general residence.” The governor said during the launch of East Africa Community International e-Passport.
Construction of an airport
The construction of an international airport is one of the projects the county has to achieve before attaining the elevation. In a statement the governor said, having held a meeting between the county government, Ministry of Transport, Kenya Civil Aviation Authority, The Kenya Defence Forces and the Kenya Airports Authority, they shall convert and renovate the military facility into a public utility.
This move aims at boosting tourism, accommodating a large number of passengers, cargo planes and boosting flower export in the region.
“Flower farmers in Naivasha will have a chance to exploit the huge market available by increasing their exports to Europe and the United States.” Mr. Shadrack Koskei the spokesperson of investors in Nakuru suggests.
In addition, the county has allocated 20 million shillings for beautification and greening of Nyayo Gardens. The county administration has also directed owners of building to repaint their buildings while ensuring they are well maintained as part of the ongoing beautification.
