Nakuru Top Market set to be refurbished
By Jeremy Ogola
The refurbishment of Top Market in Nakuru town is set to start following the handing over of the site to the contractor.
The project entails the modernization of the chicken and fish slaughterhouses, renovation of worktops, and re-carpeting of the whole market.
It also includes painting and repairing the roofing tops, electrification and repairing of the drainage system.
Trade, Tourism, and Cooperative CECM Mr. Raymond Komen said the project is meant to restore the market to its former glory as a renowned retail and wholesale food market.
“Under the leadership of H.E Governor Lee Kinyanjui, we will facelift the market and turn it into city market due to its proximity to the town center, this is more so as we are also gearing towards the city status,” CECM said.
Komen called for the need to benchmark on the managerial skills of the market in order to woo customers back to the market instead of buying from supermarkets.
He challenged the traders to support the local farmers by giving preference to their farm products.
” This will create a synergy that contributes to building a strong integrated agricultural base, which is necessary to nurture wealth generation in the economy of Nakuru County, and ultimately increase job opportunities,” he added.
Komen said the contractor should put in place water harvesting mechanisms during the renovation of the roofing system.
The CECM sentiments were echoed by area MCA Peter Wanyaguthie who thanked the Governor for his dedication in improving the state of small scale traders.
He assured the traders that their daily activities will not be interrupted during the renovation.
The renovation will be done during the off-peak hours under the watch of a selected market committee.
The project is in line with the manifesto of H.E Governor Lee Kinyanjui to construct and renovate modern markets stalls at designated areas across the County.
Top Market is one of the oldest markets in Nakuru County. It has over 500 traders.
Within the market are small kiosk unit used for a multiplicity of functions.
These include use as a stand for fruit vendors, chicken and fish slaughterhouses, grain store, selling of sweets, snacks and tobacco shop among others.
