Nakuru doctors revoke strike notice over met demands
Doctors in Nakuru County Doctors in Nakuru County have revoked a 21-day strike notice issued mid-August over a stalled 2017 Collective Bargaining Agreement, coupled with their welfare amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Union (KMPDU)- South Rift branch Secretary-General Davji Atellah said the County Government of Nakuru has met over 70 % of their demands.
County Executive Committee Member for Health Dr Gichuki Kariuki said some of the issues the doctors were raising had not been addressed for over 10 years.
In June 2020, the County of Government of Nakuru promoted 21 doctors from Job Group M-S with an effective date of July 2019 and arising arrears paid in June 2020.
The County has also designated 74 doctors in Job Group P, 18 in Job Group Q, 8 in Job Group R and 1 in Job Group S for promotion effective July 1, 2020, and to be effected not later than October 2020.
The County has also enhanced the medical cover for all doctors on the payroll. The remaining doctors employed in 2018 and 2020 will be covered by the end of September 2020.
Dr Atellah said the County had shown willingness to employ more doctors within the next 5 years as captured in the County Health Strategic Plan 2018/20 to meet the current demand.
Dr Attellah heartily thanked the County for releasing doctors for postgraduate studies on merit. Currently, 79 doctors are out on further studies locally and abroad.
Dr Gichuki said the County commits to promoting nurses, clinical officers, public health officers, physiotherapists, nutritionists and other cadres in the coming few months.
Also present during the signing of the memorandum of agreement between the County and KMPDU were Public Health CO Mr Samuel King’ori and County Attorney Caleb Nyamwange.
