County develops the Lake Naivasha Fisheries management plan

Nakuru County Government is developing a Lake Naivasha Fisheries management plan aimed at providing a strategic framework for developing a sustainable and optimal utilization of Lake Naivasha Fisheries, hence improving long-term livelihood, food and nutritional security for the population.

The plan will seek to increase resources for lake Naivasha fisheries management, avoid overlapping of mandates and provide a proper coordination framework between the agencies. Increase fish safety, quality and hygiene standards to reduce post-harvest losses.

It will further seek to strengthen the Beach Management Units, provide operations regulations, and ensure the protection and conservation of fisheries and conservation of flora and fauna around the lake.

County CECM for Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, Leonard Bor today led the first validation meeting of the draft plan where he highlighted that it will be significant in regularising activities around the lake.

He further assured the department’s commitment to ensuring the operationalization of the plan once approved.

The plan will significantly improve service delivery efficiency, increased productivity and protection in the lake Naivasha ecosystem.

Lake Naivasha basin includes the main lake and its catchment areas which includes river Malewa, river Gilgil, and river Karati as the feeder rivers.

Also present was County Attorney Caleb Nyamwange, Chief Officer in charge of Livestock, Fisheries and Veterinary Services Dr Michael Cheruiyot and Environment, Energy, Climate Change & Natural Resources Kennedy Mungai.
