Nakuru County Residents Unite for Tree Planting and Environmental Conservation

Residents of Subukia Ward in Nakuru County joined hands with the County Government and Planet Patron organization in a tree-planting initiative at Kirengero Forest. The collaborative effort aimed to plant over 1000 trees of different, contributing to Nakuru County’s goal of planting 10 million trees and the national target of 15 billion by 2030.

County Executive for Infrastructure, Eng Michael Kamau, emphasized the county’s commitment to environmental restoration and the conservation of forest and water catchment areas. The initiative also reflected the administration’s dedication to reclaiming public land, with encouragement for collaboration with FLOCCA for fencing, showcasing a holistic approach to environmental conservation and community health.

During the event, Catherine Wambui, the Assistant Chief for Munanda sub-location, expressed gratitude to the Nakuru County Government for envisioning the tree-planting initiative. She acknowledged the encroachment on the 27 acres of the forest and emphasized the importance of preserving it as a water catchment area. The conservation effort not only contributes to environmental sustainability but also aligns with the broader vision of community well-being.

A concerned villager advocated for the fencing of the forest to deter encroachment, recognizing its direct impact on community health. This dual-purpose initiative aimed to create a protective barrier against deforestation and promote the overall well-being of Nakuru residents.

Mr. Gitonga, Ward Administrator of Subukia, extended gratitude to officials and partners with FLOCCA for collaborative land protection efforts. Hon. Isabella Makori, Member of the County Assembly for Subukia Ward, commended the county government’s partnership with Planet Patron to save the water catchment in Kerengero Forest. She encouraged residents to avoid deforestation to safeguard nature for community benefit.

Chief Officer Martin Kagai from the Office of the Governor appreciated Planet Patron for contributing trees to fill the forest, to address the climate crisis. MCA Wanjiku Njoroge, Founder of Planet Patron, outlined the project’s goal, “Birthday Forest,” engaging youth and school-going children in tree planting during birthday celebrations. The organization also plans to introduce carbon credits to benefit those contributing to environmental conservation.

The event showcased a united community dedicated to environmental conservation. As Nakuru County plans to plant 10 million trees by the year 2030, this initiative reflects a collective effort toward a green and sustainable future. Representatives from the office of the Governor, Chiefs, NYS, and scouts were also present during the event.
