Nakuru Traders and Farmers to Benefit from Multi-Billion Shilling Modern Market Initiative
By Roy Lumbe and Jeremy Ogolla
Thousands of traders and farmers in Nakuru County are set to benefit from a multi-billion shilling initiative to construct modern markets across various sub-counties.
This ambitious plan is designed to empower small-scale traders, enhance their working conditions, and stimulate local economic growth.
The initiative, part of the Economic Stimulus Program (ESP), is a joint venture between the county and national government, aimed at providing dignified and well-equipped trading environments for traders.
During the groundbreaking ceremony for the new ESP market at Kabatini Trading Centre in Bahati Sub County, mid this year, Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika reaffirmed the county’s commitment to ensuring traders operate in decent market spaces.
Governor Kihika pointed out that many traders currently work in poor conditions, lacking essential infrastructure like roads and sewerage, which hampers their ability to attract customers.
“What the majority of our traders are looking for is the dignity of their hustles and the places they trade from, but most of them trade in filthy places where there is no road, sewerage, or other amenities, hence attracting people with low purchasing power,” Governor Kihika said.
The new market facilities under the ESP program will feature modern amenities such as ICT hubs, social halls, stalls, cold storage facilities, offices, and daycare services for young mothers.
The governor emphasized that these facilities would uplift the lives of small-scale traders, who will also benefit from primary processing facilities for value addition and support through cooperative societies.
Among the targeted markets are three in Gilgil Sub County—Kasarani, Gilgil Mitumba, and Kiptangwanyi—each set for transformation into ultra-modern trading facilities.
Kuresoi South will also benefit from the development of Keringet and Kiptagich markets, with the Keringet Market being developed at a cost of Kshs 50 million, including fresh produce storage facilities for local farmers and traders.
In Rongai Sub County, the Kivoronjo market is set for an upgrade to accommodate over 1,200 traders currently working in challenging open-air conditions.
The new facility will provide ample space for both existing and new traders, creating a conducive trading environment for all.
Governor Kihika has also launched market construction projects in Kihingo (Njoro), Subukia (Subukia), Molo (Molo), and Dundori (Bahati Sub County).
During the launch of the Mzee Wanyama ESP Modern Market, she was joined by Nakuru Town East MP David Gikaria, Gilgil MP Martha Wangari, and County Commissioner Loyford Kibaara assuring traders of a conducive environment.
The governor encouraged traders to form cooperatives to benefit from a county revolving fund aimed at supporting small-scale businesses.
“Market is a devolved function but we are working hand in hand with the national government to ensure our people get a dignified environment,” said Kihikaa
County Executive Committee Member for Trade Stephen Kuria highlighted the benefits of the ESP program, noting that the new facilities will provide enough space to accommodate both current and new traders, alleviating the challenges faced by those exposed to harsh weather conditions.
The creation of these modern markets is expected to transform the local economy by fostering an organized and clean trading environment.
Improved facilities will offer traders a dignified platform for conducting business, contributing to their financial growth and empowerment.
The county government also aims to strengthen connections between buyers and sellers at the grassroots level, fostering a stronger sense of community and ensuring that money circulates within the county.
The ESP program aligns with Nakuru’s broader economic development strategy, aiming to raise the standard of living for residents and boost overall economic activity.
By providing traders with the infrastructure they need, the county is taking proactive steps to ensure local businesses thrive in a supportive environment.
Governor Kihika’s administration envisions a future where all traders, regardless of scale, have access to market spaces that reflect the county’s aspirations for a modern, thriving economy.
As construction continues across various sub-counties, the project serves as a beacon of hope for Nakuru’s traders and a testament to the county’s commitment to equitable economic development.
