Nakuru Launches Countywide Youth and Sports Empowerment Programme

Written by Roy Lumbe

Nakuru County has rolled out a countywide distribution of youth and sports empowerment equipment for the 2024/2025 financial year, aimed at equipping young people with the tools, skills, and opportunities to enhance self-reliance, wealth creation, and talent development.

Speaking during the launch at Menengai Social Hall Grounds in Bondeni, Deputy Governor David Kones stated that the initiative championed by Governor Susan Kihika’s administration extends beyond the distribution of equipment.

“Today’s launch is not just about the distribution of equipment. It is a declaration of intent, an affirmation that our administration is resolutely committed to giving our youth the tools, skills, and opportunities they need to create wealth, live with dignity, and contribute meaningfully to the growth of our great county,” said Kones.

In the last financial year, the county invested Sh96 million in youth empowerment programmes across 30 wards. The support covered various sectors, including hospitality, creative economy, construction, beauty, and the Jua Kali industry.

Beneficiaries received tents, chairs, chafing dishes, sufurias, PA systems, printing equipment, ballast, concrete mixers, blow dryers, shaving machines, salon and kinyozi seats, mkokoteni, posho mills, smokie trolleys and market umbrellas.

“These are not just tools, but entry points into self-reliance and wealth creation,” he added.

On sports, the Deputy Governor stated that the county invested Sh27.5 million last year in procuring footballs, uniforms, volleyball nets, boxing gloves, and other equipment for all 55 wards. Additionally, Sh8 million was allocated to upgrade facilities in Soin, Solai, Kaptembwa, Biashara, Olkaria, and Naivasha East wards.

“We recognise the unifying and transformative power of sports. These investments are designed to nurture talent, promote healthy lifestyles and open doors for our youth locally and internationally,” said Kones.

The Deputy Governor urged young people to take ownership of the programme and guard the resources provided.

“This programme is not about handouts, it is about empowerment. My humble appeal to our youth is this: safeguard the equipment you receive, put it to good use, and let it be the seed that transforms your lives and communities,” he said.

Kones reaffirmed the county’s commitment to broadening opportunities, mobilising resources and formulating policies that give young people a fair chance to succeed.

“Together, let us build a county where our youth are not just beneficiaries, but the true drivers of change. Together, let us make Nakuru the model county for youth empowerment and sporting excellence in Kenya,” he said.

Also present were County Secretary Dr. Samuel Mwaura, CECMs, Chief Officers, Members of the County Assembly led by Deputy Speaker Anthony Kanyere, County Attorney Caleb Nyamwange, and beneficiaries of the programme.
