Be the change you want to see, Ag County Secretary urges Taxi operators
The County Government of Nakuru is dedicated to creating an enabling environment for all traders, investors, business people and the transport sector.
Today, the acting County Secretary Dr Samuel Mwaura and the County Executive Committee Member in charge of Trade, Tourism and Culture Hon. Stephen Kuria Muiruri and Chief Officer Trade Samuel Ndegwa held a closed-door meeting with online taxi drivers’ leadership who sought their advice on the standoff between them and County enforcement officers.
Speaking during the meeting, the leaders, who comprised chairpersons of various online saccos, drivers and taxi owners, shared their opinions and views on how they would like the County Government of Nakuru to address their plight.
They pointed out the need for designated pickup and drop-off points in Nakuru CBD for taxis to avoid constant harassment by police officers and County askaris.
They appreciated Governor Susan Kihika for listening to them, saying that this was the first time a government has ever listened to them.
The taxi operators gave a proposal for the removal of all the taxis that have been operating as matatus, saying that they are spoiling their reputation and making it hard for them to be trusted by customers.
On his side, Dr Mwaura appreciated their efforts to make Nakuru County safe and shine. He noted that there had been an outcry by the matatu sector and the online taxi concerning the increasing numbers of vehicles operating as both matatus and taxis.
Dr Mwaura noted that the taxi industry is a great contributor to security, growth in tourism and businesses in Nakuru. If well streamlined it can be a great investment in Nakuru.
He took time to caution those operating illegally and asked them to seek guidance from the relevant authorities.
CECM Trade Hon. Stephen Kuria took his time to elaborate on measures taken to decongest the city, asking the taxi drivers to be disciplined if they get the slots they had requested for. He also reiterated that they will keep on pressing for behaviour change in the transport industry for the better engagement of all stakeholders.
Hon. Kuria promised to address the parking slots and harassment by the County askaris so that the taxi operators can resume their businesses.
