Community tournaments to provide platform for grassroots players

Community youth tournaments are significant in ensuring that youth are not involved in crime and drug and substance abuse in the county.

It will further help develop strong social bonds and safer places and cohesion between people who live within the community.

This was highlighted during the launch of the Nakuru West football tournament in Kaptembwa Primary School, Nakuru Town West Sub-county, led by Sports CECM Josephine Achieng.

Ms. Achieng noted that the administration under the leadership of H.E Governor Susan Kihika has ensured partnerships with national teams during the tournament to provide a platform for grassroots players to be exposed for scouting.

“We will also work with the department of Lands to identify public land in the sub-county which will be ideal for rehabilitation as stadia to reduce reliance on school facilities and stadia in other sub counties,” added the CECM.

She further urged the community members to encourage more ladies in the area to join sports and help them defy gender stereotypes and social norms and show men and women as equal.

The teams participating in the tournament include 32 men teams and 4 ladies teams and are drawn from the six wards within the sub-county .

She also presented a trophy to FKF Nakuru West Sub County League 2022 champions, Everstar FC.

The tournament began with Nakuru Everstar FC winning 1-0 against Old Friends FC.

She was flanked by Chief Officers in charge of Sports Stella Mwaura, CO Office of the Governor Newton Mwaura, CO for Tourism & Culture Rosemary Kimani, CO for Lands and Physical Planning Catherine Changwony, Director Sports Alice Gekonde, Shabab Ward MCA David Wathiai and Nakuru West Sub county Administrator, Pamela Tum.
