Deputy Governor, David Kones, Joins Clean Cooking Week with Energy Principal Secretary to Promote Sustainable Cooking Solutions

Nakuru County’s Deputy Governor, H.E. David Kones, in collaboration with Energy Principal Secretary, Alex Wachira on Tuesday inaugurated the 4th edition of Clean Cooking Week at Nyayo Gardens. This event focuses on advancing cleaner and healthier cooking practices in Kenya.
The 4th Clean Cooking Week, hosted by the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum (MoEP) in partnership with the Clean Cooking Association of Kenya (CCAK), is being celebrated this year in Nakuru County. The initiative’s primary goal is to foster grassroots partnerships with County Governments to promote clean cooking practices.
During the opening ceremony, Mr. Kones, representing H.E. Governor Susan Kihika, emphasized Nakuru County’s significant contribution to renewable energy, particularly in geothermal, solar, and wind energy. He highlighted Nakuru’s ambitious energy strategic plans aimed at ensuring clean energy access for residents by 2030. Presently, 88.5% of Nakuru’s population has access to electricity, with Kuresoi North and South lagging at 24-28% connectivity.
Mr. Kones stressed the importance of clean cooking for sustainable development and climate action, urging collaboration in innovation, investment, and inclusivity to make clean cooking accessible to all. He expressed gratitude for the support from development partners GIZ, UNDP, and the Embassy of Japan.
The Energy Principal Secretary praised Governor Susan Kihika’s energy sector policies and revealed that Nakuru contributes 49% of its base load to the national grid through geothermal energy. He also announced a collaboration between the Ministry of Energy and the Japan International Cooperation Agency to facilitate last-mile connectivity in Kuresoi North and South, with the goal of achieving 100% electricity access.
The event was attended by Nakuru County Secretary, Dr. Samuel Mwaura, representatives from the Japanese Embassy, UNDP, GiZ, development partners, and various stakeholders in the energy sector.
