Environment Department Commences Climate Change Workshop across Departments

The Department of Environment, Energy, Climate Change and Natural Resources in partnership with the Arid Lands Information Network (ALIN) today commenced a 2-day training workshop for climate change and energy mainstreaming across all the County departments.

The main objective of the training was to learn about Environmental conservation, Energy efficiency, climate change advocacy and the framework for designing and delivering training programmes for understanding, analyzing and mainstreaming climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction concerns into district-level development planning.

The role of the climate change champions across all sectors is to coordinate climate change actions in their respective departments, create awareness of climate change, promote climate-smart policies and programs, and create capacity among peers in the department to ensure climate mitigation resilience and adaptation.

According to Chief Officer for Environment Kennedy Mungai who was the Host, he said that the climate champion plays a central role for an organization to reduce their carbon emissions. They are the focal point for an organization’s efforts in reducing their carbon footprint and this plays an important part in making change happen.

Climate change is a cross-sectoral issue that requires collective responsibility for climate mitigation, adaptation, and resilience in policy development, planning, budgeting, implementation, and monitoring, the training therefore targets all Chief Officers and climate change champions, to enhance their understanding of Environmental Conservation, Energy Efficiency, and Climate Change Advocacy.

“The pivotal role of climate champions in reducing carbon emissions and driving positive change.” He added. Also in attendance were GIZ and the Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KMA).
