Health Department rolls out “Hygiene Champions” training

The County’s Department of Health Services through the Water Sanitation and Hygiene – WASH sub-program promotes social behaviour change and Hygiene promotion in Schools. The Department has rolled out sensitization of teachers in all urban settings targeting primary school and Early Childhood and Development Education – ECDE teachers within the four municipalities of Nakuru.

The program dubbed “Hygiene and Behaviour Change Communication” (HBCC2) is supported by Amref with an aim to advocate for sustained hygiene during and after pandemics like COVID-19.

The County School Health Coordinator has mapped the first cohort of over 40 teachers from various schools and ECDE centres within Nakuru Municipality, Naivasha, Molo, and Gilgil to be champions of hygiene promotion. Priority has been given to special schools and ECDEs where pupils are vulnerable to sanitation illnesses.

The team of 40 teachers has also been sensitized on proper hygiene practices and the need for continuous hygiene promotion in schools. The HBCC2 project has previously supported the sensitization of other groups including local media influencers on hygiene promotion.

This is in line with HE Governor Susan Kihika’s agenda on Health to Partner with development partners and other stakeholders in investing in healthcare and training facilities to meet the demand for general, preventive, promotive, and specialized care.
