Nakuru County Enhances Sanitation with Major Sewer Upgrade
By Roy Lumbe and Annette Njoroge
Nakuru County is taking significant steps to improve sanitation by rehabilitating and upgrading a critical 279-meter sewer line in Hilton, London Ward, Nakuru West Sub-County.
This initiative, in partnership with the World Bank-funded Kenya Informal Settlement Improvement Project, involves the construction of ten manholes and the installation of uPVC pipes along Gumba Road, connecting to an existing sewer line on Siaya Road.
Upon completion, this project is expected to provide essential sanitation services to over 250 households. Currently, many residents lack access to proper sewage disposal, increasing their vulnerability to waterborne diseases such as cholera, typhoid, and dysentery.
According to the World Health Organization, inadequate sanitation contributes to the deaths of over 500,000 people each year from diarrheal diseases.
This initiative aims to mitigate such health risks by ensuring a reliable sewage system that can manage black water effectively.
The project also addresses significant environmental concerns. Nakuru’s water bodies, including Lake Nakuru, have faced pollution challenges due to untreated wastewater, particularly during flash floods.
By improving the sewage infrastructure, the county aims to prevent the discharge of untreated water into these vital ecosystems, thus protecting both public health and the environment.
This undertaking reflects the commitment of H E Susan Kihika to safeguarding public health and promoting sustainable development.
Improving sanitation is not just about infrastructure, but ensuring a healthier future for residents and protecting natural resources.
In addition to the sewer upgrade, the project is being implemented alongside other civil works, including the construction of bitumen-standard roads, footpaths, stormwater drainage systems, and high-mast floodlights along Gumba, Guko, and Roho Safi roads.
These enhancements are crucial for creating a safer and more livable urban environment, promoting better access to services, and ultimately improving the quality of life for all residents in Nakuru.
As Nakuru County continues to grow in population, initiatives like this sewer upgrade are essential in fostering sustainable urban development and ensuring the health and well-being of its residents.
