Nakuru County Fire and Rescue Officers Undergo Intensive Training in Partnership with EFRSA

Written by Okere Arnold Martin

The County Government of Nakuru, in collaboration with the European Fire and Rescue Association (EFRSA), has rolled out an intensive training program for Fire and Rescue officers. The initiative follows a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the two institutions and aligns with Governor Susan Kihika’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property by strengthening disaster response and emergency preparedness.

The program commenced with an assessment of the County’s firefighting inventory and tools to ensure they are functional and well-maintained. Led by EFRSA instructors Christian Grandjean and Nils Hentschel, officers are undergoing technical and practical drills designed to boost efficiency and preparedness. Areas of focus include vehicle extrication, rope rescue, water emergencies, interior and high-rise fires, and vegetation fires, among other emergencies.

Chief Officer of Disaster Management and Humanitarian Assistance Ken Mugo, Director Geoffrey Kioko, and Principal Administrator Gitonga Kinyanjui lauded the officers’ dedication while urging residents to report all emergencies actively. They emphasised that while fire incidents are often the most documented, other emergencies, such as drowning, road accidents, building collapses, and hazardous material spills, equally require immediate attention from the Disaster Department.

There will be additional training in the coming months and years, during which EFRSA will also deliver a container donation comprising modern firefighting tools, uniforms, and other necessary equipment. This program will further assess Nakuru’s response mechanisms to ensure the County’s fire department remains well-prepared for any eventuality.

Chief Fire Officer Patrick Kibue expressed optimism that the collaboration will significantly enhance service delivery, noting that the retraining and new equipment will empower officers to respond swiftly and effectively across the county.

Governor Susan Kihika continues to prioritise disaster preparedness and emergency response as part of her broader healthcare and safety agenda. Her administration remains committed to investing in both personnel and equipment to ensure Nakuru residents are safe and protected at all times.
