Nakuru County is keen on maintaining decorum in the matatu industry to achieve a conducive business environment for traders within the Central Business District (CBD).
Trade Executive Stephen Kuria revealed that the County has put in place a raft of measures such as proper issuance of liquor licenses, beefing security within the stages, and ensuring proper pick-ups and drop-off points.
“The matatu industry has restored a vibrant business within the town. The Saccos are even able to disburse loans to matatus operators,” said Kuria.
His sentiments were echoed by Trade Chief Officer Ndegwa Mwaura and the CO Office of Governor Newton Mwaura who both lauded sector players for cooperating to restore sanity in the sector.
They, however, cautioned non-compliant operators that they risk having their operators’ licenses revoked.
On his part, County Police Commander Zachary Kimani revealed that they will cooperate with the county to help enforce by-laws that will help restore security in the sector.
Central Rift Matatu Owners Association chairman Stephen Muli assured Governor Susan Kihika of the industry support.
Other matters discussed were the need for touts to have uniforms, the digitization of a taxi business, the illegal selling of liquor, and the withdrawal of licenses to those selling liquor in stalls constructed by the government, especially markets.
