Nakuru County Set to Partner with Development Organizations to Enhance Public Participation
Written by Samuel Gatimu
Nakuru County has taken measures to strengthen citizen participation in the development and oversight of government projects, aimed at ensuring citizen voices are integrated in the decision-making process.
Chief Officers Hon. Edward Gitau, (Public Participation and Citizen Engagement), Charles Koech (Administration and Devolution) and Alice Abuki of Disaster Management today held a meeting with USAID Kenya to have a framework that will help to achieve this milestone.
To show the commitment of Governor Susan Kihika’s administration to this cause, the County has appointed Public Participation Champions across all County Departments, including Sub-county Administrators, who will be tasked with the crucial role of disseminating information and engaging with citizens down to the grassroots level.
“Through sensitization and engaging citizens directly in development and management roles, reduction in vandalism and public resources will be realized and the Citizens will feel part owners of the project,” Mr Koech said.
This was echoed by Mr Miss Abuki and Mr Gitau who advocated for regular updates and involvement of residents in development plans and programs in an area at a given period of time.
The meeting underscores the growing recognition of the value of public input in governance by Nakuru County under the leadership of Governor Susan Kihika and the positive impact it can have on the safeguarding of government projects.
Deputy Office Director at USAID Kenya Sheila Karani said to enhance democracy in governance, Kenyans should be involved in initial plans and decisions affecting development programs at the grassroots. She added, this will empower citizens to influence Government policies and enhance delivery of quality services.
