Partnerships enhance county’s anti-COVID-19 responsiveness

The County Government of Nakuru has enlisted services of other government agencies to help in COVID-19 surveillance, contact tracing, and the enforcement of public health measures.

The county’s Department of Health is also working with Kenya Field Epidemiology and Laboratory Training Program (K-FELTP), a move aimed at improving the COVID-19 detection and response and other respiratory diseases such as Pneumonia.

The K-FELTP is a division within the Department of Preventive and Promotive Health in the Ministry of Health mandated to increase epidemiological capacity in the country.

Minister for Health Dr Gichuki Kariuki said the collaboration will strengthen laboratory participation in surveillance and field investigations as well as strengthen public health human resource capacity.

Other activities being undertaken include hospital records review, mental health/ psychosocial support, and assessment of home-based care preparedness within the County.

Public Health CO Mr Samuel King’ori said the department is on high alert owing to Nakuru’s position on the great northern corridor that connects the port of Mombasa to several East and Central African countries.

Mr Fredrick Odhiambo from K-FELTP said their epidemiologists and respiratory disease experts will be in Nakuru for 10 days to train healthcare workers on the updated COVID-19 guidelines by the World Health Organization.
