Nakuru County Executive Committee Member for Youth, Sports, Gender and Social Services Josephine Atieno joined the Ogiek People’s Development Program (OPDP) as they launched the Ogiek Women Empowerment Project.
The project aimed at uplifting the socio-economic status of Ogiek women across the six counties of Nakuru, Kericho, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Bomet and Nandi. The Ogiek, an indigenous hunter-gatherer community in the Mau Forest Complex, are a recognized minority in Kenya.
Ms Achieng pledged the Department’s coordination with other county departments and stakeholders to ensure the project’s success and sustainability. She underscored the necessity of equipping women with life skills, financial literacy, and group dynamics through capacity-building initiatives.
“The social-economic empowerment of women is in line with the Governor’s manifesto and I encourage you to thrive well in these streets,” stated Ms Achieng.
“I support this initiative and from my end in the directorate of Gender I will follow up for its implementation to see many women be empowered across the county,” said Kamuren.
The Chief Officer for Gender Gladys Kamuren urged Ogiek women to assume leadership roles at all levels, from households to communities, and advised them to utilize the financial assistance provided by the project to improve their economic standing.
Present were Vivian Yegon, Gender Officer, representatives from the State Department for Gender, Social Protection, Uwezo Fund, and Gender Directors from Narok, Uasin Gishu, and Baringo counties.
