NAKURU, Kenya 17th March – H.E. the President Uhuru Kenyatta and Deputy President William Samoei Ruto alongside our H.E. the Governor Kinuthia Mbugua commissioning the state of the art medical equipment today at the Nakuru Level 5 Hospital.
This program has been made possible through the Managed Equipment Service MES partnership between the County and the National Governments.
The equipment included an ICU, theater, a renal unit and MRI. The renal unit has 49 dialysis centers and can handle 2,500 patients. Using the MRI machine will cost residents only Ksh 10,000 as compared to Ksh 40,000.
This hospital provides a wide range of clinical and support services to client. These services include Medicine, Surgery, Renal, Accidents and Emergency, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics, Dermatology, ENT, Dental Services, Pharmacy, Laboratory Services, Radiology, Blood Transfusion, Rehabilitative as well as Preventive and Health Education services.
The Renal Unit has one Nephrologist, six Nephrology nurses, three nurses trained on job and one biomedical engineer. Through the Managed Equipment Services (MES), the Renal Unit has received an additional establishment of five units, increasing the total dialysis units to sixteen. The unit can now serve an average of 30 patients per day.
Still we are aspiring to increase the Renal units. Despite the increase in the number of units, the demand for dialysis is continually increasing. The hospital has an average of 50 dialysis patients on the waiting list at any given time.
This health facility also has an Intensive Care Unit headed by Anesthesiologist. In addition, the unit has fourteen nurses, six Physiotherapists and support staff. The ICU has been expanded from four-bed capacity to six with High Dependency Units fitted with an oxygen generating plant courtesy of MES.
Further, the ICU is now equipped with adult, pediatric and neonatal ventilators. With this capacity, the ICU is now able to run optimally at 100% bed occupancy. Through the Radiology Department, the Rift Valley Provincial General Hospital is able to provide a wide range of diagnostic services. The following are the services provided: General X-ray, Mammogram, CT-Scan, MRI, Ultra Sound, EEG, OBG X-ray and EEG. Through MES project, most of the X-ray equipment have been upgraded to digital.
From this agreement, the Naivasha Sub-County has also gained through renovation and equipment of three departments.
The theatre has been boosted for timely sterilization of surgical equipment. The facility has also received fifteen surgical sets, two operating tables and theatre lights.
Further, the hospital has received CSSD-Autoclave machine and ultra-washing machine. The X-ray equipment package includes: Bravio direct X-ray machine, Aloca 5 ultrasound, portable X-ray machine, and c-arm fluoroscopy machine. This equipment will change completely the diagnostic capabilities of the various diseases for timely intervention to secure the health of our people.
