The 2024 chapter of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence (GBV) under the theme “Unite to End Violence against Women” has had a significant impact in Nakuru County. The campaign toured Nakuru Town West, Nakuru Town East, Naivasha, Gilgil, Subukia, Molo, Rongai, Njoro, Bahati, and Kuresoi North, focusing on raising awareness and addressing GBV.
The initiative targeted four critical areas: addressing the root causes of GBV and prevention strategies, health issues related to GBV, stress management, and legal frameworks to combat GBV. The campaign’s activities included community dialogues in the 10 sub-counties, a football match at Kinamba Estate, Naivasha, and processions in Naivasha and Nakuru Town East.
During the tour in Sachangwan, the Chief Officer for Gender, Social Services, and Inclusivity Gladys Kamuren, called for collaboration in the fight against GBV.
“Gender issues need to be addressed comprehensively. The county government of Nakuru is committed to ensuring that GBV cases come to an end,” she emphasized.
In Naivasha sub-county, the GBV Cluster Coordinator John Kinuthia praised the initiative, revealing that over 2,000 people in Naivasha were directly reached.
“This campaign has been a game-changer in creating awareness and mobilizing community action against GBV,” he said.
Gladys Muigai, a representative from Speak Kenya, noted that the outreach was particularly effective in engaging boda boda riders. Speak Kenya’s legal clinics provided legal advice, equipping participants with tools to handle GBV cases more effectively.
Locals recommended the expansion of dialogues to include more grassroots leaders, continuous capacity-building sessions and equipping of administrators and community leaders to improve efficiency in handling GBV cases.
This exercise brought together several key stakeholders, including the County Government of Nakuru, USAID Tujenge Jamii, MIDRIFT HURINET, Dandelion Africa, Radio Yetu, Speak Kenya, local leaders, and other officials, whose support ensured the campaign’s success and sustainability.
