
Nakuru Championing Natural Resources Conservation Through Sports

The Deputy Governor, David Kones graced the 9th Mau Egerton University Cross country Competition that was held at Egerton University Sports Ground with the theme “Run for Mau” to conserve Mau Forest.
The race attracted athletes from various parts of the country which had different categories such as 10 km senior men and women, 6 km under 20 men and ladies,2 km staff and others. The winners were awarded trophies and cash prizes.
Some of the winners were Aaron Kibet who won in the 8 km under-20 race. The senior women’s 10 km race was clinched by Bett Sigei. Nehemiah Kipyegon emerged first in the senior men’s 10 km race which was tightly contested.
The Deputy Governor conveyed greetings from H.E. Governor Susan Kihika and thanked the partners for coming on board to see the event through. Mr.Kones, speaking on behalf of the governor, congratulated all the athletes regardless of their finishing position and promised to continue working with the athletes. The discipline that the athletes displayed during the competition was also commended by the Deputy Governor.
The County Executive Committee Member for Youths, Sports, Gender and social services Josephine Atieno explained that the use of sports has helped create awareness to conserve the environment moreso the rehabilitation of the Njoro River.
Kenya Commercial Bank Chief Executive Officer David Nyamu spoke of how their organization has been sponsoring athletes in recent days and shall continue doing so. He also added that they were happy to be a part of the initiative.
Professor Wario, Chair of the Egerton Council, expressed his gratitude to the County Government for accepting to be a part of the noble cause. He also spoke of Egerton being at the forefront of the conservation of natural resources.
