By Jilopa K. Ezra and Brian Oino
Today, in a collaborative effort to improve the safety and health of waste disposal workers, the Director for Environment, Energy, Climate Change, and Natural Resources, Grace Karanja, in partnership with Coca-Cola Company, presided over the issuing of overalls to garbage collectors and environmental officers. The beneficiaries of this initiative were drawn from Nakuru Town East and West sub-counties.
This initiative marks a significant step towards enhancing the working conditions of waste collectors, highlighting a key milestone in the county’s ongoing efforts to support sanitation workers. By equipping these workers with appropriate protective gear, the county aims to ensure that all sanitation workers are better protected and can carry out their duties more safely and efficiently.
Addressing the gathering, Grace Karanja underscored the county’s dedication to environmental sustainability and the well-being of its employees. “Our waste collectors play a crucial role in maintaining the cleanliness and hygiene of our communities. Providing them with proper protective gear is not just about ensuring their safety but also about recognizing their invaluable contribution to our society, in line with Governor Susan Kihika’s administration,” she stated.
The distribution of overalls is part of a broader initiative by the county government to enhance the operational efficiency and safety of waste management services. By equipping collectors with suitable gear, the county aims to reduce health risks associated with waste collection and promote a more professional appearance.
Several waste collectors expressed their gratitude for the new overalls, noting that the protective gear would significantly improve their working conditions. “This is a welcome move. It shows that the county values our work and is taking steps to protect us,” said one of the recipients.
Joining the Director were Environment Officers Kimani Kuria, and Paul Kahara, other environment officers, officials from the Coca-Cola Company
