Department of Water and Environment meets County Assembly committee for Water and Environment

The Department of Water, Environment, Energy, Natural Resources and Climate Change has held an induction meeting with the water utilities and the Departmental Committee of the County Assembly in charge of Water and Environment.

Among key issues discussed include the expansion of scope in water coverage, enhanced sustainability of projects and understanding the role of every stakeholder in water, environment, sanitation and climate change sectors.

A majority of the leaders present emphasized the need for the establishment and rehabilitation of high-impact water projects that incorporate solar energy which is clean, cost-effective and sustainable.

“We want to forge an enabling environment between our leaders at the ward level and WSPs to deliver H.E. Governor Susan Kihika’s mandate on the provision of clean, affordable and potable water to the people of Nakuru,” said the department’s CECM Dr Nelson Maara.

Dr Maara also highlighted the need to fast-track the drafting of climate mitigation projects like tree planting through the Ward Climate Change Planning Committees so as to ensure Nakuru County gets to benefit from the World Bank- FLLoCCA fund.

With sustainability being the centre of attention, the plenary pledged to offer immense support to the water utilities for proper management of water projects which translates to good service delivery.

The Chairperson of the Committee Hon. Rose Chepkoech committed to ensuring the department is well supported in terms of budget and oversight for the implementation of the projects and programs.

Also present was Chief Officer for Water- Ms Margaret Kinyanjui and Mr Kennedy Mungai CO Environment alongside technical personnel from both the department and the three water utilities.
