Introduction
The Department of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries, and Veterinary Services is responsible for enhancing agricultural productivity, promoting sustainable livestock and fisheries management, and ensuring animal health and welfare. The department provides policies, technical support, and extension services to improve food security and economic growth.
Mandate
- Promote sustainable crop and livestock production.
- A food secure, industrialized and wealthy County.
- To ensure food and nutrition security and wealth creation through offering client-oriented extension services and promotion of commercialized and sustainable Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries industries.
- Create an enabling environment for Agriculture.
- Livestock, Fisheries and Veterinary Services and provide efficient services to the citizens of Nakuru County.
- Enhance crop production for increased productivity, food, nutrition security and wealth creation.
- Increase livestock production, productivity, health and improve livestock products and by-products to enhance food security in the County.
- Increase fish production for enhanced food security, employment creation, income generation and poverty reduction.
- Enhance dissemination of agricultural information to the farming communities for improved agricultural productivity, food security, and farm incomes.
- Enhance Agricultural Engineering technologies for agricultural productivity, food security and wealth creation.
Functions
- Promote food and nutritional security.
- Formulate and implement agricultural law and policies.
- Promote crop, livestock, fisheries and veterinary services.
- Promote agribusiness, post-harvest management practices and value addition.
- Manage crop, livestock, fisheries pests and diseases.
- Collect, analyse, manage and store Agricultural data.
- Collaborate with the department responsible for water and other relevant stakeholders in water harvesting, irrigation and drainage technologies.
- Promote agricultural mechanisation services for agricultural production.
- Promote climate smart agriculture.
- Conduct research and provide extension services in agriculture.
- Participate in regulation of the quality of agricultural inputs, produce, products and services.
- Coordinate stakeholders in the agricultural Sector.
