Provide a title for this article… Nakuru residents can now enjoy a cleaner, greener, and more beautiful recreational space following the official reopening of the iconic Lions Garden, a key public park in the heart of Nakuru City.
The reopening marks a significant step towards enhancing public spaces, boosting the city’s beauty, and promoting climate-friendly urban development.
The 1.19-acre park, which has been under rehabilitation since November 2023, has been transformed through a Kshs 10 million project funded by the Financing Locally-Led Climate Action (FLLoCA) program in collaboration with Nakuru County’s Department of Environment and the local business community.
Nakuru County Deputy Governor David Kones while representing Governor Susan Kihika officially opened the park on Friday. In his remarks, Kones hailed the facelift as a demonstration of the power of partnerships between government, development agencies, and the private sector in improving public spaces and enhancing residents’ quality of life.
The refurbished garden now features modern landscaping, new tree varieties, vibrant flowers, security lights, clean public washrooms, an office, durable concrete and steel seats, and a reliable water system to support its greenery.
A dedicated section has also been set aside for licensed photographers, shoe shiners, and beauty service providers, who will operate from newly built stalls designed to blend with the park’s aesthetics.
The rehabilitation aligns with Governor Kihika’s broader vision to transform Nakuru’s urban spaces into climate-resilient and people-friendly areas. Similar improvements are underway at Nyayo Gardens, parts of Moi Avenue, and green areas around Menengai Crater and the State House arboretum.
Deputy Governor Kones urged residents to take pride in the revamped Lions Garden, encouraging them to protect and preserve the space to ensure future generations can also enjoy its beauty and serenity.
The reopening restores Lions Garden’s status as a cherished green haven for Nakuru residents, reinforcing the county’s commitment to sustainable urban planning and climate action in one of Kenya’s fastest-growing cities.
