Nakuru boosts water access and environmental conservation in Njoro Sub-County
By Jilopa K Ezra
The Nakuru County Department of Water and Environment has made significant environmental sustainability and community empowerment efforts through two key projects in Njoro Sub-county.
An inspection tour led by Sub-county Water Officer Mr Geoffrey Githinji highlighted the progress of the ongoing conservation efforts at Davishon Dam and the advancement of the Mutitu, Wendani, and Rurii water piping projects.
The multi-phased Davishon Dam Conservation and Protection project employs an integrated approach to environmental management.
Key activities include constructing a live fence to safeguard the dam from encroachment, introducing aquatic vegetation to enrich biodiversity, and strategically placing Langstroth beehives to foster pollination and support local honey production.
Mr. Githinji emphasized the benefit of this initiative, stating, “This integrated approach ensures that we conserve our environment while empowering the community economically through sustainable ventures like beekeeping.”
This project is a vital component of a larger strategy supported by the FLoCCA program. The strategy aims to bolster climate resilience, protect crucial ecosystems, and improve livelihoods in areas facing water scarcity.
The department also assessed the advancement of the 6.5-kilometer Mutitu, Wendani, and Rurii water piping project in Subuku Sub-location, Kihingo Ward. This crucial infrastructure development is poised to deliver clean and safe drinking water to over 700 households and essential public institutions such as the chief’s office, business hubs, and local farmers.
Historically, These communities have depended on the Subuku Dam, situated 3 kilometres away, for domestic and agricultural purposes. The water will be distributed from a newly established tank, a testament to the Nakuru County Government’s ongoing commitment to enhance water access and elevate the quality of life for its rural residents.
Area Member of County Assembly (MCA) Hon. Simon Kamau, alongside Mr Githinji, underscored the water project’s alignment with Governor Susan Kihika’s pledge to expand water infrastructure and support community livelihoods through dependable water access.
The inspection team also included Water Engineer Angela Watetu, a Procurement Officer, the Governor’s Coordinator, and other departmental officials.
