Written by Niva Kimtai
Nakuru County Deputy Governor, Hon. David Kones, has confirmed to education stakeholders that Nakuru County is effectively implementing the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), ensuring that quality education is delivered to all learners in the ECDE centres across the county.
This success has been made possible through enhanced infrastructure, the provision of learning materials, age-appropriate furniture, and capacity building for teachers through CBC training.
Hon. Kones highlighted these efforts during the Nakuru Chapter Stakeholders Engagement Forum on Implementation of CBC, which was held at Nakuru High School under the Ministry of Education’s State Department for Basic Education.
With the theme “Strengthening Stakeholder Engagement for Effective Implementation of Competency-Based Education,” the forum aimed to gather feedback on the implementation of Competency-Based Education (CBE) since its inception in 2019.
The forum is part of the nationwide county-based dialogues on education quality and learning outcomes for CBC.
This forum also provided a platform for stakeholders to offer feedback on the CBC’s implementation, including the validation of transition guidelines from Junior to Senior Secondary School, which is slated for next year.
A team from the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD), Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC), Teachers Service Commission (TSC), and the Ministry of Education made a comprehensive presentation on CBC implementation, outlining all the stages, step-by-step, and the expected outcomes.
Key stakeholders, including Florence Amoit, Secretary of the Administrative State Department of Basic Education, urged participants to provide constructive feedback, emphasizing that these efforts are for the benefit of the future of the Kenyan child.
Majority Leaders, County Assembly of Nakuru, Hon. William Mutai in his remarks, highlighted the importance of collaboration in CBC implementation for its success.
“We are at the grassroots and we are the best people to disseminate CBC message to the people in the village. The knowledge gained here will give us a reason to appropriate more funds towards education to enhance effective implementation of CBC for the benefit of our children.”Mutai said.
County Executive Committee Member for Education, ICT, e-Government and Public Communication Hon. Zipporah Wambui pointed out the importance of parents’ involvement in CBC as key stakeholders asking the Ministry to offer regular sensitisation on the same.
The CECM also highlighted the significant steps the County has taken to ensure equipping the youth with technical skills that are market-driven through the County Vocational Training Centers.
The administration of H.E Governor Susan Kihika supports each trainee with a capitation fund of Ksh 30,000 annually. This fund is to ensure trainees receive quality training that will connect them to job opportunities.
The forum was attended by Rosemary Wambua, Regional Director for Education; the Regional Director for TSC; the Deputy County Commissioner for Nakuru West; and Victoria Mulili, County Director for Education, among other stakeholders.
