20 acres of land acquired for ultramodern Keringet athletic camp

The County Government has acquired 20 acres of land for the construction of the ultramodern Keringet Athletic camp that will cost Sh 70 million.

Speaking during the launch of the Governor’s Sports Tournament at Afraha Stadium, Governor Lee Kinyanjui said the camp will be used by junior athletes who seek to improve their skills.

He noted the undisputed talent among youth in Nakuru County adding that the facility will support such talents and take the athletes to the world stage.

“The sports economy is rapidly growing across the world and we have the potential to be ranked among the best counties in sports,” the Governor said.

At the same time, the Governor said the countywide tournament was meant to engage the youth and make sure they are not involved in alcohol and drug abuse among other ills.

He added that sports have been used to ease tension in the past where different communities who were at war have been brought together.

“In times of conflict, we have used sports to bring unity among the disagreeing communities which is proof that sports are a powerful tool,” the county boss said.

In his speech, the Deputy Governor Dr Eric Korir noted that ball games have been neglected in the past and asked the relevant officials to look into the matter.

The acting Sports and Gender CEC Dr Peter Ketyenya also reiterated the support of the county to the youth in sports.

He further noted that the upgrade of Afraha Stadium that is set to start in August will make room for more games including indoor games that have not been undertaken in the County.

According to the Sports Chief Officer Mr Peter Mwaura, the tournament will involve 828 teams across the county with 550 teams participating in soccer, 275 in volleyball and three teams in sitting volleyball.
