Trade department to formulate policies in sports tourism

Ag.Director Tourism Mr. Dominic Saitoti has commended the efforts of tour operators in the County in marketing the services offered by players in the hospitality sector.

Speaking today during the issuance of certificates to registered Tour Operators in the County, Mr Saitoti said the Department of Tourism is in the process of formulating a Data Base that will contain all the tourist sites and record the number of people who visit them.

With the growth of businesses in Nakuru County, the demand for conference halls has increased dramatically.

According to Jumia Travel app, Naivasha and Nakuru took up to 17% of international visitors who visited the country in 2017 for business purposes.

In the area of sports Tourism, it is no secret that Nakuru is the home of some great athletes.

This fact has prompted the County Government to initiate an ambitious program to promote the county as a leading sports tourism destination.

Sports tourism is an emergent sector of the global travel industry equating to Ksh 60.7 trillion a year.

With Nakuru having the highest number of golf courses and drive ranges in the country, Governor Lee has called upon youth to get into sports for sustainability.

In partnership with the Kenya Tourism Board, the Department is also formulating policies in promoting sports tourism attracting sports fanatics with its range of national and international sporting events.

With Afraha stadium set for refurbishment and the construction of new facilities like an athletic track, swimming pools, gymnasium, basketball courts and a modern football pitch, Nakuru has set its path as a Tourism destination of choice.
