All Asbestos roofs for County houses to be replaced by Galvanised Iron sheets

The Department of Lands,Housing and Physical Planning has started removing all asbestos roofing in Kivumbini Estate.

Asbestos is a hazardous material and has been linked to increased cases of cancer.

Roofs in the vast estate are being replaced with galvanised iron sheets.

Lands, Housing and Physical Planning CECM Francis Mwangi said the project which will cover houses in Baharini, Machanga, Kaloleni,Kimathi, Nakuru 1 and Flamingo will ensure all asbestos roofing is removed as it poses a health risk to the inhabitants.

The CECM said the Department County Government has set aside Ksh 60million for renovation projects in the Ward.

Mwangi said the projects include re-roofing, setting up modern abolition blocks and upgrading the sewer lines.

He directed the contractors to ensure that all the asbestos materials are surrendered and taken to the County Depot for disposal.

Both the sewer upgrade and the re-roofing projects will be undertaken by local youth.

Mwangi said the County Government under the leadership of H.E. Governor Lee Kinyanjui is determined to ensure affordable and comfortable housing as Nakuru heads to City Status.

Area MCA Wilbur Onyango expressed gratitude to the County Government for initiating the renovation projects in the estate.

He called upon the contractors to make sure the new structures are durable and create more jobs.

Other officials who were present included Nakuru County housing director Benard Maruhi, Kivumbini Public Health Officer, Jane Otieno, Deputy Sub County administrator, King’ori Mwangi and Kivumbini Ward administrator Rahab Njuguna.
