County Allocates Sh 40 Million For Gilgil Sub County Hospital Upgrade

The County Government of Nakuru has allocated Kshs40 million for the upgrade of the maternity wing of the Gilgil General and Psychiatric Hospital.

As a result of the funding the Hospital will also be able to cater for road crash emergencies on the busy Nairobi -Nakuru highway.

Governor Lee Kinyanjui, who officially opened a theatre at the hospital, said it will ensure that residents will not have to travel to Nakuru or Naivasha towns for specialized medical care.

So far 26 ceasarean and 4 other surgeries have been done at the facility.

The mental hospital has been operating since 1965 and the facility caters for 87 Male and Female patients.

Some of the patients have been abandoned by their families and were transferred to the facility from Mathare.

The mental unit plays an important role at easing the congestion at Mathare Teaching and Referral Hospital in Nairobi.

The Governor,who was accompanied by Health Secretary Sicily Kariuki urged the National Government to help expand the facility.

The CS said her ministry will assist procure drugs for the Gilgil psychiatric facility and also send a technical team to assess the hospital with a view of expanding it.

The team will also evaluate the possibility of constructing a Kenya Medical Training College(KMTC) as the hospital sits on a 60-acre piece of land.

The Cabinet Secretary said the Country cannot realise Universal Health Care without addressing mental health.

The CS promised to give mental health special attention and help Nakuru develop a County mental plan.

The Governor was also accompanied by Deputy Governor Dr. Erick Korir, Gilgil MP Martha Wangare, Olkalou MP David Kiaraho, Health CECM Dr. Kariuki Gichuki, Education CECM Joseph Kiuna, a host of MCAs and County officials.
