Nakuru County is targeting to plant at least 10 million tree seedlings across the County in collaboration with the Kenya Forest Service (KFS).
This is to boost the county’s forest cover to the nationally-agreed standards, promote environmental conservation, and mitigate the effects of climate change in line with Governor Susan Kihika’s manifesto.
KFS is expected to provide 8 million tree seedlings with the county government topping up with 2 million tree seedlings that will be distributed for planting in farmlands and gazetted forests.
County Water, Environment, and Natural Resources Executive Dr Nelson Maara today joined residents of Naivasha in a tree planting exercise at Kamere Beach to commemorate International Forest Day.
Today’s event-themed ‘Forest and health’ saw a total of 300 trees planted on the shores of Kamere beach.
On his part, Nakuru County forest ecosystem conservator Mr Peter Mukira said their mandate as KFS is to ensure they conserve, protect and increase the forest cover besides planning for the future benefits of the coming generation.
Other stakeholders present included Kenyatta University, Green Blue Foundation Africa, Nakuru Deputy County Commissioner, and the area chief.
