County partners with FAO towards Crop and Pest Surveillance

“The County Government has partnered with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) to facilitate for the surveillance of crops and pests in Subukia Sub County making it the only region in Kenya to have such”

These were the sentiments of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries CECM Dr.Immaculate Maina.
She spoke during the Youth Disability Inclusion Programme follow up process, which is an initiative of the First Lady Mrs. Elizabeth Kinyanjui.
The best farmer in Subukia and awarded in various ceremonies in a Person with disability.

“We will seek to recruit the Youth as disease and pests scouts as a quick response to the surveillance initiative “She added.
The CECM encouraged the Youths to venture into Agriculture as it had better returns on investments.
The weather in Subukia is also conducive for the farming process.

The Department will work with 30 farmers in Macadamia farming where each will get 20 seedlings .It will also work with 255 Avocado farmers who registered and each will get 20 seedlings .The same initiative will be reciprocated in Pyrethrum farming.

She informed the Youths they will get teachings on Avocado farming as well as on maintenance of Nurseries which they currently have.

She reiterated on the importance of soil testing which has proven to be an effective and efficient farming practice.
“My department will train the Youth in mobile soil testing techniques where a test on a single farm has a return of ksh 1000.This will greatly assist them to have special interest in Agriculture “

Dr.Maina also talked of the plant clinics that were held across the County and the importance it has to the farmer.
With the changing rain patterns, the plant clinics offer the much needed help to farmers.
