County sets aside Ksh 50 million to purchase pyrethrum seedlings

The County Government has set aside Ksh. 50 million this financial year for the purchase of pyrethrum seedlings for farmers across pyrethrum growing sub-counties.

In addition to that, pyrethrum farmers in Nakuru County will be among the beneficiaries of the Ksh. 40 million worth of seedlings support by the National Government.

This was unveiled by Agriculture Cabinet Secretary, Peter Munya, during his visit to Nakuru County while addressing pyrethrum farmers in Molo sub-county.

While commending efforts of the County Government in achieving approximately 2000 acres under the crop, CS Munya urged an upscale of acreage to 10,000 acres.

He said all sectors are working together to ensure maximum production of clean seed and quality seedlings as the County continues with its revival process.

Private players are key to the success of the revival program to ensure healthy competition and avoid monopoly, CS Munya noted.

At the same time, four vehicles were flagged off to aid in the distribution of seedlings as the rains continue.

The Cabinet Secretary encouraged farmers to practice crop diversification to help with multiple incomes as there are available markets for their produce.

H.E Governor Lee Kinyanjui said that the County has made tremendous efforts in restoring farmer confidence resulting in their demand for more seedlings.

He encouraged farmers to upscale their farming while looking into the future of the crop as a major earner as the county continues to attract various pyrethrum processors offering between Ksh. 200-250 per kg of flowers.

He was flanked by Deputy Governor, Dr. Erick Korir, County Commissioner Erastus Mbui, Health CECM, Dr. Gichuki Kariuki, Agriculture CO Kibett Maina, PPCK MD Mary Ontiri among other government officials.
