County upgrades stadiums to nurture, develop talents
The County Government of Nakuru is set to rehabilitate and modernize at least one stadium in every sub-County.
At the same time, the County is working with the National Land Commission to repossess grabbed land meant for stadiums.
Nakuru County minister for Youth, Gender, Culture, Sports and Social Services Engineer Lucy Kariuki this would help develop talents among the youth in the County.
Such stadiums are synonymous with inter-estates, village and ward football tournaments that have produced top-flight players.
The Minister was speaking at Gilgil Stadium in Gilgil where she officiated the Gilgil Ward football tournament organized by area MCA Jane Ngugi.
She later commissioned modern players’ changing rooms and distributed sports kit to various women and women football, volleyball and rugby team.
The block has male and female changing rooms, bathrooms, and a caretaker’s office.
“Nakuru County has 17 stadiums and we have assessed what is required to develop sports,” she said adding that the County would make necessary budgetary requirements.
She revealed that the County Government of Nakuru is in talks with the Kenya National Highways Authority to divert a drainage system making the stadium to flood.
Gilgil Ward MCA Jane Ngugi thanked the County Government of Nakuru for showing commitment in nurturing sports in the County.
“As MCAs, we are very passionate about nurturing sports and we will not hesitate in passing all relevant Bills that seek to develop sports in the County,” she promised.
Gilgil Sports Council chairman Mr. Ouma George said the renovation of the stadium will go a long way in nurturing sports and ultimately create employment.
He was optimistic that vibrancy in sporting activities in Gilgil will help make Gilgil sub-County a fully-fledged Football Kenya Federation branch, delinking from Naivasha.
Tam Tam Queens football team striker Elsa Atieno said the changing room and washrooms will boost their morale as players.
“We would use thickets to answer call of nature and change rooms, something that made us feel forgotten,” she stated urging Governor Lee Kinyanjui to address other challenges facing the stadium.
