Speaking while officiating Kenya Union of Savings and Credit Co-operatives Limited (KUSCCO) regional council meeting, County trade minister Raymond Komen said Cooperative movements have the capacity of realizing such investments through the value addition of agricultural products and marketing.

“The cooperatives within Nakuru County have been identified as one of the models in enhancing agricultural and non-agricultural productivity through trade in large volumes of agricultural products and engagement in the distribution of farm inputs,” said Mr Komen.

The County administration has made several strides when it comes to supporting the cooperative movement especially through the revolving cooperative fund bill to ensure they give support to the community. The cooperatives are strong in sectors like Housing and Land, Agriculture and Saving and credit cooperatives.

Mr Komen said Governor Lee Kinyanjui’s administration is leveraging on the availability of industrial parks and economic zones within the County to attract investments opportunities in the agricultural sector in terms of value addition of the produce.

On Cooperative Societies (Amendment) Bill 2020, which seeks to compel the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Cooperatives to tame Saccos that have been causing anxiety in the multibillion-shilling industry, Mr Komen said County will seek better engagement with regards to the decision on the bill.

“The Bill, which already is parliament, states that both the national and county governments shall put in place measures to promote the development of the cooperative sector and the effective management of Saccos”, he said.
