Farmers Allowed to Harvest their Crops in Menengai Forest

Nakuru County Government in collaboration with Kenya Forest Service have given a go-ahead to farmers who had planted crops within the Menengai Forest Reserve to continue harvesting until full stakeholder engagement is undertaken which will determine the next course of action.

The Chief Officer in charge of Environment, Energy and Natural Resources Kiogora Muriithi announced the decision today at a meeting held in Kiamaina ward.

Cultivation activities under Plantation Establishment and Livelihood Improvement Scheme (PELIS) program, was recently outlawed following complaints by a section of Menengai forest stakeholders that the activity harbored illegal clearing of indigenous trees in the government forest.

Mr. Muriithi however, outlined that farmers are not allowed to engage in any further crop planting in the forest until stakeholders announce the next course of action.

Nakuru County Ecosystem Conservator, Francis Misonge, urged the residents to observe the directives given by the county government.

Area MCA, Wahome Jambo Kenya, thanked the county government for allowing his constituents to harvest their crops saying most of them depended on farming for their livelihood.
