Nakuru County Now Crafting a Tailored Nutrition Policy
Written by Ruth Magak
Nakuru County has embarked on a transformative journey to fortify its commitment to good health through a county-specific Nutrition Policy. This strategic initiative is integral to preserving and building upon the gains achieved through the Nakuru County Nutrition Action Plan (CNAP).
Throughout the lifecycle, good nutrition is a prerequisite for good health, adding a layer of quality to life. Governor Susan Kihika’s nutrition strategies stand at the core of a strong, healthy, and productive society.
This visionary plan aims to position Nakuru as a locally and internationally competitive and prosperous County with a high quality of life by 2030. In H.E. Governor Susan Kihika’s ambitious goal, it is imperative to address the triple burden of malnutrition that Nakuru faces.
According to the Kenya Health Demographics 2022, Nakuru’s malnutrition status has a triple burden encompassing undernutrition (stunting at 18.5%, wasting at 3%, underweight at 9%, overweight/obesity at 3%), and micronutrient deficiencies, including diet-related non-communicable diseases (DRNCD).
These challenges, if left unattended, can undermine the country’s economic growth and long-term development. Recognizing this, Nakuru County has been proactive in implementing the CNAP, a comprehensive strategy designed to combat malnutrition in all its forms.
The CNAP is a robust and community-centric initiative that has been a driving force in Nakuru County’s battle against malnutrition. From addressing stunting and wasting to tackling micronutrient deficiencies and combating diet-related non-communicable diseases, the plan is a testament to the county’s dedication to the well-being of its residents. The practical interventions outlined in the CNAP have yielded positive results, laying a foundation for sustained progress.
In a bid to fortify these gains and ensure a lasting impact, Governor Susan Kihika’s administration has initiated the development of a county-specific Nutrition Policy. This policy is set to serve as a guiding framework, aligning seamlessly with the CNAP and the broader development goals of the county.
The policy development process is a collaborative effort, involving key stakeholders, community leaders, health experts, and development partners led by Nutrition International. “We are tailoring the policy to the unique needs and challenges of Nakuru County as we aim to create a sustainable roadmap for nutrition that can withstand the test of time,” said Roselyn Mungai, County Executive Committee Member for Health while opening the policy development workshop today.
The Nutrition Policy under development takes a comprehensive approach to address the triple burden of malnutrition. It recognizes the interconnected nature of these challenges and aims to provide targeted solutions.
Governor Susan Kihika understands the economic implications of neglecting the nutrition agenda. Without sustained efforts to address malnutrition, the economic growth and long-term development envisioned for Nakuru County could be compromised.
The commitment to addressing malnutrition in all its forms, coupled with a tailored policy framework, positions Nakuru County as a beacon of progress in Nakuru’s journey towards Vision 2030.
In the coming months, as the policy takes shape, the county will continue to engage with the community, seeking feedback and collaboration.
This inclusive approach ensures that the policy reflects the diverse needs of Nakuru’s residents and becomes a living document that truly serves its purpose.
