800 Acres of Land to be used for affordable Housing-Says Governor Lee
Nakuru Governor Lee Kinyanjui has asked the State Department for Housing and Urban Development to use the 800-acre piece of land that was initially earmarked for an airport, as the ground for affordable housing units.
The land which had been set aside in 2011 was considered unviable after a feasibility study showed that it was a flight path for flamingoes when migrating from Lake Nakuru.
He also asked the National Government to include local suppliers when constructing the houses.
“We would like you to consider local suppliers and manufacturers of building materials when constructing the houses to give the community a sense of involvement in the project,” the Governor said.
Governor Kinyanjui also asked the National Government to look into the land grabbing case of the 30 acre land near the GK Prison in London estate.
He was speaking when he received Housing and Urban Development PS Charles Hinga in his office this morning ahead of the inspection tour of KISIP 1 projects in Kaptembwa and Kwa Rhonda estates, Nakuru West Sub County.
During the tour of the 1.7 billion road network and stormwater drainage, the Governor noted the importance of the stormwater drainage in preventing human and property loss during the rainy season.
“The Stormwater drainage is very important to our people since, in the past, stormwater has caused a lot of damage that has cost lives,” said Governor Kinyanjui.
At the same time, PS Hinga commended the works done so far and gave the County Government the go-ahead to apply for KISIP 2.
“I am happy with the work that has been done here and would urge the residents to take personal responsibility and take care of the infrastructure in the area,” he said.
In November, Governor Kinyanjui will be signing a 4.2 billion agreement with KfW bank that will be used to expand the sewer system in the County as well as boost the biodiversity.
The County Government is also planning to construct markets across the County and will start with a fish market in Naivasha as well as produce markets at Kihingo, Keringet, and Olenguruone.
On waste management, the County Government will set up skip loaders at Kaptembwa in the next two weeks, where residents will dump their waste to prevent waste disposal in the drainage system.
