County seeks partnership in developing arts
The County Government of Nakuru is ready to work with like-minded partners in developing theatre, arts and film industry in the County.
According to Deputy Governor Dr. Erick Korir, the growth will create direct and indirect job opportunities, promote culture and tourism.
The County Government of Nakuru is in the process of signing a memorandum of agreement with the Kenya Film Commission to set up a fully furnished resource center.
The center will build and enhance capacity among local creatives to tell authentic local and regional stories.
The Nakuru Players Theatre has been abuzz with theatre and film activities, a move Dr. Korir said was a deliberate move to Nakuru County as a creative hub in the region.
Dr. Korir was speaking when he officiated the Lake International PanAfrican Film Festival (LIPFF) 2019 Gala Awards ceremony on Saturday evening.
LIPFF is aimed at empowering the youth on the power of film for social change and to sensitize young performers and filmmakers on film and entrepreneurship.
The competition attracted participants from South Africa, Nigeria, Cameroon, Uganda, and Tanzania.
The Admission Protocol, a Ustadi Films produced by Mr. Wilson Osiolo and directed by Mr. Odipo Riaga, won the category of best Nakuru Film.
The movie is about a young lady who ventures into a risky business to get money and offset her mother’s hospital bill and upkeep.
Unfortunately, her brother is fired from a pharmacy outlet and loses her mother.
Ms. Dorcas Odege, who has worked with both the National Government and the County Government of Nakuru, was awarded for her distinguished work in empowering artists.
Nakuru County minister for Youth, Gender, Culture and Sports Eng. Lucy Kariuki said the refurbishment of the Nakuru Players Theatre was a show of commitment in empowering artistes.
Chief Office Tume Abduba called on artistes to form organized groups to enjoy government programs and funding targeting the creative industry.
The Kenya Films Commission CEO Mr. Timothy Owase expressed willingness to partner with the County Government of Nakuru and the development of the local film industry.
KFC is mandated to develop, promote and market the film industry locally and internationally and identify and facilitate the growth of the film industry.
The LIPFF Director Dr. Zippy Okoth commended Governor Lee Kinyanjui for his immeasurable support that saw the international festival in Nakuru succeed for the second year in a row.
