County to equip Vocational Training Centers

The County Government of Nakuru is in the process of building, equipping and renovating Vocational Training Centers in order to absorb thousands of Form 4 leavers who fail to transit to universities.

 

Education, ICT, and e-Government CECM Mr. Raymond Komen also noted that the County has set aside funds to ensure that learners at all levels remain in class through the academic calendar.

 

Mr. Komen noted that the County has already disbursed the first tranche of Sh49 million to a total of 9, 044 students in special schools, secondary, vocational, colleges and universities. 

 

The CECM was speaking when he toured Mang’u Vocational Training Centre and Ol Rongai Vocational Training Centre on a fact-finding mission.

 

At Mang’u, Mr. Komen noted that the Center was completed and functional but was not adequately equipped.

 

“The county will ensure the center is equipped by end of June, and start sensitization programs for the community to know this facility exists,” he said.

 

However, at Ol Rongai, which sits on 5 acres parcel of land, the center was incomplete, vandalized and seemingly abandoned.

 

Mr. Komen directed the school committee and the ward administrator to table a status report within 7 days.

 

“Make sure you assess the vandalism and quantify it. We cannot be wasting public money on projects, only for criminals to come in and destroy them,” said Mr. Komen.

 

Earlier in the day, Mr. Komen had officiated a Thanksgiving and Prize giving ceremony at Mema Secondary school in Rongai Sub County.

 

He noted that the County Government of Nakuru was keen on reversing the worrying education standards in the County.

 

“The surest way of realizing our dream is by laying a better foundation for our children by enrolling professional teachers, building and equipping our classes,” the CECM noted.

 

He stated that the County has trained Early Childhood Development and Education teachers in line with the ongoing education reforms.

 

“We have equipped 21 ECDE centers and a process of recruiting some 350 teachers is ongoing through the County Public Service Board,” Mr. Komen revealed.

 

The County is working on a school feeding program that will see pupils remain in school.  

 

The County education boss was accompanied by Menengai West Ward MCA Mr. Symon Mwangi, County education officials and opinion leaders.

 

Mr. Mwangi urged parents to play an active role in the education of their children, even after high school.

 

“We should not give up on our children when they do not attain grades required by universities. The students can still achieve their dreams by joining Technical Vocation and Education Training Centers,” noted Mr. Mwangi.
