DG Dr Korir challenges multinational companies to support sports development

Nakuru County Deputy Governor Dr. Eric Korir has challenged multinational companies operating in the country to consider sports development in their corporate social responsibility programs.

 

Dr. Korir said such companies should put more emphasis on other areas of interest such as sports apart from solely channeling resources in profits making.

 

The Deputy Governor was speaking when officials from Multichoice Kenya and Coca-Cola called on him at the County headquarters. He nostalgically recalled topflight football clubs that were sponsored by multinationals, especially in the horticulture industry, operating in the country decades ago.

 

The DG noted that the companies should partner with Counties in growing sports, “We have many areas of corroboration for mutual benefit.”

 

He added that the County Government of Nakuru is ready to partner with companies that would create more jobs for the youth as well as improve livelihoods through CSR projects.

 

“We welcome companies to partner with us in the rehabilitation and building of stadiums, training centers and sports academies within,” he urged.

 

The County is set to open high altitude training camps at Keringet Ward and Sirikwa Ward to nurture sporting talent. Of the 5 Gold medals that Kenya bagged at the Rio Olympics, 2 were from Nakuru by 1,500m champion Faith Chepng’etich and marathon champion Geoffrey Kirui.

 

The Deputy Governor said the training camps project is one of the many areas that the County and corporates would partner. Multichoice Kenya General manager Mr Simon Karitu said the Pay-TV service provider is in the country to support sports development by providing sports channels and airing activities.

 

The two companies, Multichoice Kenya and Coca-cola, have planned a Consumer launch on 2nd-3rd June, at the Rift Valley Sports Club, that will mark the kick off of all football activities ahead of World Cup tournament in Russia.

 

Earlier, the deputy governor had received members of the Naks Volleyball team who won the men’s the Kenya Volleyball Federation, Third Leg KVF National League cum AMACO International Tournament trophy in Uasin Gishu County last week.

 

In his remarks, Dr. Korir said the county will be holding tournaments in sub-counties to nurture emerging talents for consistency.
