Farmers Benefit From Macadamia And Avocado Seedlings
The County Government of Nakuru through the Department of Agriculture today issued the first batch of 2,000 macadamia seedlings worth Ksh 416,667, in Gilgil sub-county.
The launch of macadamia seedlings distribution was graced by the Deputy Governor Dr. Erick Korir and CECM Agriculture Dr. Immaculate Maina.
The Deputy Governor said the county will facilitate farmers to tour and learn from already established macadamia regions.
The CECM reiterated on the economic and environmental importance the trees would bring.
With each farmer receiving 20 seedlings, and the cost being 500/- per seedling, farmers are expected to get an income of about Ksh 180,000 after selling 60kg of macadamia per tree.
On top of that, Ksh 7 million was set aside to procure 14,000 seedlings in the 2018/2017 financial year to be distributed in 7 sub-counties.
Gilgil residents have about 100 acres of Hass avocado planted and today received 4,333 avocado seedlings worth about Ksh. 1.3 million.
Also present were the Chief Officer Mr. Kibet Maina and acting Director Agriculture Ms. Hannah Oduor among other officers.
