Governor Lee launches County-KWS partnership to market Lake Nakuru in a 100 days initiative
The Kenya Wildlife Service in partnership with the County Government has launched a Rapid Results Initiative to market Lake Nakuru National Park for the next 100 days.While launching this initiative, Governor Lee Kinyanjui commended the efforts of the wardens and Kenya Wildlife Service staff in restoring the glory of Lake Nakuru and assured them of the County Government’s commitment to support this effort.
“The beauty and diversity of Lake Nakuru National Park is undisputed despite the challenges that the park is currently facing,” the Governor noted.
He added that the initiative to have an open day for visitors into the Park this Sunday will enhance ownership of the park by residents and all Kenyans.
“The park has other unique features apart from flamingos, which include lions that climb trees and different bird species,” he added.The County boss also noted the importance of the upcoming airport set to be constructed in Lanet.
“We continue to push for the construction of an airport that will open up the Park to more visitors.”
On solid waste management, the Governor said the County Government has received funding from KfW that will help to separate the sewer and storm water systems.
He further urged the KWS to create an animal corridor from Naivasha to Nakuru that will create a free space for the wild animals to move.
According to KWS Director General Brg (Rt) John Waweru, there is still room to restore Lake Nakuru into its former glory.
“Although the flamingoes have fled from the lake, we still have a vibrant park that offers a variety of wild animals and various bird species,” Brg Waweru noted.
He confirmed that the anthrax outbreak reported early this year in the park is under control adding that the last death was recorded on May 10.
“145 buffaloes died out of the 4,100 present which was 3.45 percent of the total population,” Brg Waweru said.
He quickly added that KWS was however on high alert incase of another outbreak and that they have also come up with long term measures to mitigate this problem.
