Nakuru youth group donates chicken to feed COVID-19 victims

A youth-led agricultural investment company based in Njoro sub-County has donated 600 chickens to the Nakuru County Level 5 Hospital.

The company, Kolanut Capital Kenya Ltd, situated at Ngongongeri Farm was started last year by a group of 5 youth aged below 25 years, all alumni of Princeton University in the USA.

The company’s Chief Operations Officer Mr Hannington Omwanza said the move will complement the County Government of Nakuru’s efforts on its COVID-19 pandemic programs.

“We thought of the people in COVID-19 isolation and quarantine facilities as well as the general wards and saw it fit to donate the birds for their dietary needs,” stated Mr Omwanza.

Governor Lee Kinyanjui has called on corporates and individuals to donate resources to cushion the vulnerable communities against the COVID-19 pandemic effects.

The Nakuru County Level 5 Hospital medical superintendent Dr Joseph Mburu, public health officers and veterinarians inspected the farm before the birds were slaughtered and dispatched.

Dr Mburu said COVID-19, just like other diseases, has adverse effects on people with low immunity and the birds will provide essential nutrients to boost patients’ immune system.

Mr Omwanza called on other youth in the region to venture into agribusiness and reap from food supplies due to the global shortage occasioned by COVID-19 pandemic.

Kolanut Capital Kenya Ltd also runs a dairy project and has employed over 5 local youth directly.
