Roads Department introduces new roads maintenance program

CECM roads and Transport Eng Michael Kamau together with Chief officer Kennedy Mugo and Director roads, Symon Kariuki today held a consultative meeting with MCAs who form part of the roads committee at Nakuru Agricultural Training Centre to discuss the newly designed Road maintenance program termed as Maintenance of Rural and Urban Roads Program (MRUP)

The Pilot project, which was previously known as “Boresha Barabara”, is set to open up new roads and maintain existing roads to motorable standards by utilizing the existing County machinery.

This program has had notable achievements since its inception and will be grouped into four teams, according to the proximity of one ward to ward. This will avoid long-distance movement of equipment and machinery from ward to ward.

The teams include:

• Nakuru East, Nakuru west and Njoro Sub County..
• Molo, Kuresoi North and Kuresoi South Sub County
• Subukia,Rongai and Bahati Sub County.
• Naivasha and Gilgil Sub County.

Each team will have a backhoe, a roller, two tippers and one grader.

Engineer Michael Kamau noted that the department has proposed a two-cycle period for the MRUP program based on experienced climatic history, as some areas are inaccessible at the height of rainy seasons.

The first cycle will commence between the months of February and March while the second cycle will start after the long rains.

Chief Officer Kennedy Mugo urged the members to own the program for full resource optimization and utilization.

The meeting was chaired by Malewa West MCA, Francis Mungai, who is the Chair of the roads committee.

The meeting was also attended by MCAs from Gilgil, Hellsgate, Nyota, Visoi, Tinet, Naivasha East, Nakuru East, Kiamaina, Kiptororo, Barut, Eburu Mbaruk and Menengai West. The Naivasha Sub-county Engineer, Edgar Sirima was also in attendance.
