Senate seconds Nakuru to be elevated to a City

The Senate Standing Committee on Devolution and Intergovernmental Relations have seconded Nakuru municipality’s request to be elevated to a city.

While touring some of the sites in the municipality, the committee led by the Chairperson Hon John Kinyua said the projects were impressive and met the required standards set out by law.

The tour started at the Gioto dumpsite where the committee learned of the waste management systems that the County Government has put in place as well as the rehabilitation process of the dumpsite that was once an eyesore.

The next stop was the Nakuru Referral Hospital where they toured Margaret Kenyatta Mother-Baby Wing and the Outpatient Department that is currently under construction.

Hon Kinyua said the work is done at the upcoming radiology center and the maternity wards would not only benefit residents of Nakuru city but also the counties that depend on the Nakuru Referral Hospital.

The team later visited Nyayo garden and the proposed Fire station before heading to the Nawasscoal Treatment plant and the proposed Airport at Lanet Barracks.

The tour culminated with a public participation forum at the Old Town Hall Building. Representatives from various institutions gave their views on the preparedness of Nakuru municipality and whether it should be elevated to city status.

Hon Kinyua assured the participants that their views would guide the report that will be tabled to the floor of the Senate.

The committee was accompanied by a member of the Lands, Housing and Physical Planning committee at the County Assembly as well as members of the Nakuru Municipal Board.
