International Women’s Day

The Nakuru County Government has illustrated its firm stand in the fight for women empowerment and gender equality by holding a celebration to commemorate the International Women’s Day.

The event was held at the ACC Grounds, Kabazi, Subukia Subcounty, and was attended by hundreds of women from all walks of life.

The day embraced this year’s International Women’s Day campaign theme #EachforEqual, which has been drawn from the notion of collective individualism that seeks to promote collective action and shared ownership for driving gender parity.

The guest of Honor, Hon. Priscilla Nyokabi, a commissioner in the National Gender and Equality Commission, applauded H.E. Hon Lee Kinyanjui for being the first in the 47 counties to hold such an event.

She also vowed that the National Gender and Equality Commission would fully back the County Government of Nakuru in its efforts to set up a gender mainstreaming policy.

Deputy Governor Dr. Eric Korir accentuated the bold efforts that the county is making in promoting women empowerment by setting up various rescue centers for victims of Gender-Based Violence throughout the county.

The county is also ensuring free maternity services via the Beyond Zero Campaign and is key in providing training and funding programs for women.

The event saw three groups awarded cheques amounting to 1.2million by the Women Enterprise Fund, which gives interest-free loans to groups registered via social services and also does marketing and exhibitions for goods produced by the groups.
