Governor Lee Makes Submissions Before Devolution Committe

Nakuru Municipality made a huge step today towards attaining city status as Governor Lee Kinyanjui made submissions to the Senate Standing Committee on Devolution and Intergovernmental Relations on why the municipality should be elevated to a city.

Sitting before the committee led by the Chairperson Hon. John Kinyua, the Governor highlighted the journey that Nakuru has taken and the future plans of the city.

“As a County, we appreciate the journey that we have taken from the time Nakuru was awarded the Municipal Charter up to this point,” he said.

The Governor then delved into some of the issues including the airport, availability of land, water and the sewer system in the County.

The County boss explained to the committee that the County Government’s decision to upgrade the currently underutilized Lanet Airstrip to an international airport instead of buying land elsewhere was informed by prudent resource management.

He added that his administration has been buying land to ensure the County Government has space for public facilities in the future as the city grows.

On water, Governor Kinyanjui said a number of boreholes have been drilled in Kabatini area to boost water supply.

“We are also working to upgrade our sewer system at a cost of Ksh 900 million as we await the implementation of the Ksh 3.5 billion biodiversity project funded by the German development bank(Kfw),” he added.

The committee is planning to visit Nakuru County in two weeks’ time on a fact-finding mission before they table the city status report on the floor of the Senate.
